Description
The Rookery is a house with a probable 16th-century or earlier east crosswing, and a lower hall range likely dating to the 17th century, which was later bricked. 19th-century alterations were also made. The timber frame of the crosswing is visible externally on the east and north sides. The south front of the crosswing is faced with early 18th-century red and grey brick in a chequered pattern to the ground and first floors, with roughcast above the gable. The hall range to the west is faced with 19th-century red brick in a Flemish bond. The roofs are covered with steep old red tiles.
The house comprises a 1 1/2-storey hall range facing south and a 2-storey gabled crosswing projecting to the front. A large English-bond brick chimney is located at the east end (rear bay) of the two-bay crosswing. The south front has a plat band and plinth to the brickwork. It features a first-floor window with three lights in a flush casement, and ground-floor windows with two lights, set within segmental arches. An entrance under a tiled, gabled hood leads to a lobby positioned centrally to the chimney. Two gables are visible over the upper windows. Casement windows with two lights are located under the eaves; while two- and three-light casements with segmental arches are on the ground floor, alongside a western lean-to. The east and north sides of the crosswing have close-studding on the first floor. Boards, coach screwed to the outside of the studs, are used to simulate heavy tension braces, with plastered infill panels between. The purlin ends indicate a side-purlin roof.
