Description

A barn range, likely dating from the 17th century or earlier, is located at Howells Farm, Weston Halls Green. The range comprises two barns of similar design, joined in-line. The eastern barn now functions as a swimming pool enclosure, while the western barn serves as a meeting room. The timber frame construction rests partly on an old flint sill and partly on renewed brick. The barns are clad in dark weatherboarding, and have steep pitched roofs now covered in slate. The eastern barn features a projecting gabled north porch in the middle bay. The western barn has double doors in its middle bay and a lean-to, roofed outshut on the south side of the same bay.

The eastern barn showcases jowled posts, curved braces to the tie-beams, a mid-height rail within the walls, and one purlin to each roofslope, clasped by a collar with straight queen-struts. It also includes long, curved wind-braces and tension braces. The western barn features jowled posts, long straight tension braces, braces to the tie-beams, and a single purlin to each roofslope carried on inclined straight queen-posts.
