Description
The South Barn at Weston Lodge is a barn dating from the late 17th century, with a rear aisle added in the late 18th century. It features a timber frame on a brick sill and is covered in dark weatherboarding, while the rear extension is made of red brick. The barn has a steep thatched roof, with the rear extension, porch, and front lean-tos covered in red tiles.
This tall, three-bay barn is located on the south side of the farmyard, facing south. It has a gabled projecting porch on the south side, flanked by lean-to additions and an added rear aisle. The porch includes three doveholes in the gable triangle and has double doors leading to the central area.
The barn's structure includes jowled posts, unjowled mid-bay posts, and a mid-height rail that is jointed in-line. It has straight braces supporting heavy tie-beams, with one purlin on each slope clasped by a collar supported by inclined straight queen-struts. The wallplate over the posts features face halved bladed scarf joints. The old elm boarding of the barn is protected by the front lean-to, and some wall studs have been removed to create the rear aisle.
