Description

Kiln Wood Cottage and the linked outhouse were built in 1912 by E.L. Lutyens for H.G. Fenwick as an estate carpenter's house. The cottage is constructed from red brick in English bond, with lighter red brick dressings. It features a steep handmade tile roof with tiled courses at the bellcast eaves at the front and a catslide on a slightly flatter pitch at the rear. The linked outhouse, which is 1½ storeys high and half-hipped, uses similar materials.

The house has two storeys and faces east, with two ground floor front windows and a door located off-centre to the south. There is a long window positioned centrally under the eaves, leading to the stairwell. Inside, there is a large internal chimney located centrally. The ground floor front windows are two-light flush casements with small panes, set beneath a segmental light red brick arch. The jambs of the windows and doorway are also made of light red brick. The entrance features a half-glazed panelled door within a heavy frame, topped by a moulded flat hood supported on pierced shaped brackets. On the first floor, there is a four-light casement window.

The large chimney has clasping corner pilasters and a waisted top, with a gable at the rear. The rear outshut has a battered west wall that was later extended three-quarters along the rear in a matching style but with a vertical finish. There have been alterations to the windows at the southern end. Drawings related to the building are held in Hitchin Museum, dated November 1912.
