Description
Nos. 1 and 2 Hitchwood Cottages, together with an outhouse linked to the north, are two estate houses built as a semi-detached pair in 1913 by E.L. Lutyens for H.G. Fenwick. The buildings are constructed of narrow red brick with lighter red brick detailing around the windows and at the corners. They have a steep red tile roof, with tile hanging to the gable ends and the south side. The main block runs east-west and features a large central chimney with recessed panels and a waisted top. A central gable is located in the middle of the south side, and a central recess in the middle of the north side allows for a first-floor window for each cottage. The main entrance on the north side is sheltered by low eaves and features a moulded plank door within a heavy frame. The windows are flush wooden casements with small panes and heavy glazing bars. A single-storey, linked outhouse has a door and window facing south for each house. The outhouse is connected to the cottages by a central wall. Tiled corbels run continuously under the bellcast eaves. No. 1 is situated to the east. The cottages are associated with what was formerly Home Farm, now Ladygrove Stud.
