Description

Reeves Cottage is a late medieval open hall house that underwent significant changes in the early 17th century when a chimney stack and floors were added. A front lean-to extension was built in the 18th century, and a further extension was added to the south end in the 1970s. The cottage features a timber frame with roughcast walls and a steep old red tiled roof that extends as a catslide over the front extension.

The house has two storeys and faces east, showcasing a canted bay window with a hipped tiled roof to the left of the door, and a lean-to red brick extension on the right. There is a three-light and a single-light box dormer at the eaves. The boarded door is situated under a flat hood supported by shaped brackets. Inside, there is a large internal chimney with a corbelled cap located a third of the way from the north end, and a small projecting gable stack on the south side, with a window on each side on both floors. The interior displays an exposed frame and axial beams, with remnants of a two-bay open hall featuring smoke-blackened rafters, suggesting the house was originally larger. The inserted beam in the north room has bar and hollow stops that are similar to those on the lintels of the back-to-back fireplaces in the stack built around the central truss. The cottage was formerly known as Hill Farm Cottage.
