Description
This is a late 16th-century, two-bay timber-framed house, with a 17th-century lean-to extending to the north and a sympathetic 20th-century extension to the south. The original bays feature an exposed timber frame on the ground floor with red brick infill, and tile hanging on the first floor. The south addition has a red brick ground floor and tile hanging above. The roof is tiled with a central brick chimney, originally positioned at the end of the main house. The cottage has two storeys and four windows, with 20th-century casement windows. A central, gabled weatherboard element is supported on wooden piers. The north lean-to obscures the north wall of the house, which is constructed with box framing and red brick infill. The roof structure includes through purlins.
Inside, the ground floor of the original part was originally two rooms, now combined, with sockets indicating the former location of a partition in the central beam. The spine beam has a 2-inch chamfer with lamb's tongue stops, and the floor joists in the southern part also feature lamb's tongue stops, while those in the northern part are plain. The open fireplace has a wide wooden bressumer with run-out stops, along with two built-in wooden seats and a salt hole. On the first floor, features include gunstock jambed posts, exposed beams with run-out stops and original floorboards. The roof has collar beams and through purlins. A rear door has an old iron hinge and an early 19th-century plank door.
