Description

The large barn at Claylane Farm, dating from the 16th century with an extension in the 18th century, is a tall, seven-bay timber-framed structure weatherboarded and positioned at right angles to the road, facing east. The roof is covered in corrugated iron, and there is a brick base. On the west side, there are two projecting gabled porches located in the third and sixth bays from the north, with double doors directly opposite on the east side. The southern end of the barn features heavy 16th-century timbering, including massive jowled posts, tension bracing halved over the outside of the studs, and long curved braces leading to a cambered tie beam. There are grooves for wattle infill between the wall studs, and the queen strut purlin roof has been reconstructed. The 18th-century extension to the north consists of five bays with unjowled posts, staggered rails, and curved braces leading to flat tie beams. Inside, laths were fixed over the wall studs before the weatherboards were applied, and plaster was added from the inside. This barn is of special structural interest as it combines early and late framing systems within a single building.
