Description
The Habit is a house located in Braughing village, dating from the 16th century. Originally an open-hall house, it was altered around 1700 and extended to the north, with a rear wing added around 1947. The building features a timber frame that is roughcast, topped with an old red tiled roof. It is a long, two-storey structure with four windows facing west. The house has three-light casement windows and a central door aligned with a large central chimney. The door is set within a 16th-century segmental arched, hollow chamfered heavy doorframe that has sunk spandrels, and it leads to a former screens passage of the hall that extends to the right (south), where there is a two-storey bay at the southern end. The two-storey section to the left of the door was extended by one bay to the north, likely when the hall was floored and a stack was inserted around 1700.
