Description
Old Forge is a house located in Braughing village, dating from the late 17th century and renovated in the 20th century. The building features a timber frame that is plastered, with the front displaying panelled pargetting. It has steep roofs that are now covered with slate. The house has a two-unit end chimney plan and faces east, with a 19th-century rear wing and a projecting internal gabled chimney at the north end, which has been rebuilt. There is also a small 20th-century corner chimney at the south end. A rear lean-to, which was formerly continuous along the back, is situated in the angle of the wings.
The symmetrical east front has two windows on each floor and a central door. The windows are flush box sash with 6/6 panes, which have been renewed. The entrance features a six-panel fielded door with a deep hood supported by shaped brackets. Inside, there is a winding stair beside the chimney at the northeast corner, jowled corner-posts but unjowled central posts, a queen-strut, and a two-bay clasped-purlin roof without collars. The ground floor north room has chamfered joists and an axial beam.
