Description
Benedict is a house, now divided into two houses, located in Braughing village. The building dates back to the 16th century, with the western part altered in the late 17th century and the eastern part largely rebuilt in the 18th century. It features a timber frame covered in roughcast. The western part is one and a half storeys high, with thatch above an old red tile slope and two gabled tiled dormers. The eastern part, known as No 5, is taller at two storeys, thatched with a half-hip at the eastern end and a lower rear wing to the northeast.
Inside No 4, there are fragmentary remains of a small open-hall house, with two pairs of posts that once supported tie-beams, which were removed in the late 17th century when a floor and chimney were added. These posts indicate either a cross-passage or a hearth bay. The framing in the eastern wall features heavy curved tension braces, with a door position at the southern end leading into No 5.
The southern elevation facing The Square has a central plank door for No 4, flanked by two-light, flush small-paned casements, and similar windows in the two dormers above. No 5 currently lacks a front door and has irregularly spaced flush casement windows (which have been renewed) on each floor. A tall chimney rises from the front slope of the roof.
