GREAT AMWELL LONDON ROAD TL 3510 (east side) Hertford Heath 14/10 Allenby, at Haileybury and Imperial Service College 200 metres west-north-west of Quad II

Boarding house for school. Built in 1868 for Mr. Rhoades as 'Highfield house': enlarged 1892: altered 1935: name changed 1937. Red brick banded with darker brick and moulded stone string course at plinth and upper-floor cill level. 2-storeys and attics, raised on a high base due to falling ground. Terrace at S. Steep red tiled roofs half-hipped. Hipped 2-light dormers with tile-hanging to sides. Segmental arches to windows, set back under flat 2-centred arches on 1st floor. Small-paned casement windows with transomes on 1st floor but deeper windows and French door on ground floor without glazing bars. Wing at SE corner has triple sash windows within similar arched openings. Original one and a half storeys picturesque gabled dormitory wing extends to W with entrance under tiled lean-to in the angle. Parellel later one and a half storeys W wing in bright red brick with deep cove to eaves of tiled roof with a row of hipped dormers. Large gable stack with moulded plinth offset carried round, and flanked by narrow flushbox sash windows under rubbed brick flat arches. (Blunt (1966) 12, 28).
