Description
Allenby, located at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, is a boarding house built in 1868 for Mr. Rhoades, originally named 'Highfield House'. It was enlarged in 1892 and altered in 1935, with its name changed in 1937. The building features red brick banded with darker brick and has a moulded stone string course at the plinth and upper-floor cill level. It is two storeys high with attics, raised on a high base due to the sloping ground, and has a terrace at the south. The steep red tiled roofs are half-hipped, and there are hipped two-light dormers with tile-hanging on the sides. The windows have segmental arches, set back under flat two-centred arches on the first floor. The first floor has small-paned casement windows with transoms, while the ground floor features deeper windows and a French door without glazing bars. A wing at the southeast corner has triple sash windows within similar arched openings. The original one and a half storeys picturesque gabled dormitory wing extends to the west with an entrance under a tiled lean-to in the angle. There is also a parallel later one and a half storeys west wing made of bright red brick, featuring a deep cove to the eaves of its tiled roof and a row of hipped dormers. A large gable stack with a moulded plinth is offset and flanked by narrow flushbox sash windows under rubbed brick flat arches.
