Description

Clifton College, School House is a boarding house built in 1862 by Charles Hansom. It is constructed from Brandon Hill Grit with limestone dressings, featuring ridge stacks and a cross-gabled slate roof, and is designed in the Collegiate Tudor Gothic Revival style. The building has a single-depth plan around two internal courtyards and consists of two storeys and an attic, with a twelve-window range.

The elevations are asymmetrical, with the southeast side showcasing a central projecting gabled wing that includes a large two-storey canted four-light bay with a weathered roof. This bay is separated by a panelled band from a three-light mullion and transom window above. To the right, there are five paired windows beneath a continuous drip, with triple windows at each end and a left-hand door. Four eaves dormers with barge-boards are present, along with two smaller louvred dormers above. The left side features two large paired windows, a right-hand doorway with a three-light overlight, and two dormers. The projecting gabled wing has a two-storey canted three-light bay with paired attic windows and a paired left-hand window.

The left return displays two gabled ends to parallel ranges, with a small gable in between that has external stacks. The rear elevation facing Guthrie Road has an irregular ten-window range, with a left-hand gable and oriel, a central exterior stack, and three gabled dormers with mullion windows. The right return is symmetrical, featuring outer gables and a central rendered section. The interior has not been inspected.
