Description
The Eagle Aviary at Bristol Zoo is a circular aviary built in 1962, designed by Saxon, Smith and Partners. It features a central concrete cylinder surrounded by laminated Douglas fir timbers and a concrete outer ring wall that is faced in blue and white mosaic tiles. The aviary has a central cylindrical tower and eight ribs of varying heights to adapt to the gently sloping site.
The structure is formed by a circular canopy supported by five concentric ring beams, with a central ring of glass domes. Slender iron struts connect the canopy to the perimeter ring and the perimeter wall, supporting wire mesh netting. The timber bird houses located beneath the canopy are not included in the listing.
