Description

Clifton College, Big School is a hall built in 1862 by Charles Hansom, located in Bristol. The building features snecked Brandon Hill grit with limestone dressings, gable and lateral stacks, and a slate roof. It has a single-depth plan forming the southwest side of a quadrangle and is designed in the Collegiate Tudor Gothic Revival style. The structure is three storeys high with a ten-window range. The ground floor has two-centred arched windows with a shallow arch, while the upper floors feature taller windows with two transoms, all separated by buttresses leading to a stepped crenellated parapet. There are two large lateral stacks set in crow-stepped gables, and the steep roof is adorned with ten louvred, gabled dormers below the ridge.

At the left end, there is a square stair tower, and the left-hand gable has a stack. The right-hand gable includes two ground-floor windows separated by a buttress, a large seven-light upper window with Perpendicular tracery, and a finial. The building also has diagonally-set stacks with linked cornices. An attached parallel two-storey block on the northeast side faces the quadrangle and features steep gables and three bays, with the central bay being blind and topped with a gable that has a large lateral stack.

Inside, there is a stone dogleg staircase and an inserted floor at the gallery height of the former hall, which boasts an arch-braced roof with quatrefoils through the braces and crenellated corbels.
