Description

The North East Wing of Clifton College in Bristol is a science lecture theatre that has been converted into classrooms. Built around 1898 by architects Hansom and Bond, the building features snecked Brandon Hill Grit with limestone dressings, cross axial ridge stacks, and a slate roof adorned with bands of hexagonal slates. It has a single-depth plan that forms the northeast side of the college quadrangle and is designed in a Collegiate Tudor Gothic Revival style, incorporating Decorated Gothic Revival-style tracery.

The structure is two storeys high with an attic and basement, presenting a ten-window range to the quadrangle. It connects Wilson Tower with Guthrie Memorial Chapel. The ground floor has paired cross windows separated by single-storey buttresses, while the first floor features two flat-headed three-light mullion and transom windows on the left, and three two-centred arched windows that rise to the right, with a sill band that follows the incline of the former lecture theatre's floor. The left side has a crenellated parapet and two large three-light lead-clad dormers, with gables above the right-hand windows. The steep roof includes diagonally-set stacks with linked cornices.

On the northwest gabled end, there are basement windows arranged in a three-window range, along with a large stepped window in the attic. Inside, there is a ground-floor passage leading to the quadrangle side, with classrooms located behind it. The building features stone dogleg stairs, and the former lecture theatre has been divided by an inserted floor, showcasing an arch-braced roof.
