Description

Clifton College, located on Worcester Road in Bristol, is an attached house that has been converted into a school. It was built in 1863 by Charles Hansom and is designed in the Gothic Revival style. The building is constructed from squared Brandon Hill grit rubble with limestone dressings, featuring external and ridge stacks, and a tiled roof adorned with bands of round-nosed tiles.

The structure has a double-depth plan and consists of two storeys, a basement, and an attic, with a three-window range. The front is asymmetrical, showcasing a first-floor string course, a right-hand gabled wing, and a lower left-hand gable with decorative barge-boards. The central entrance porch, which is level with the wing, features a two-centred arched doorway with moulded chamfered jambs, a tympanum decorated with a trefoil, and carved panels depicting hunting horns. Above the doorway is a pierced parapet with quatrefoils.

The windows are also designed in the Gothic style, featuring two-centred arches with chamfered reveals and relieving arches, and consist of 2/2-pane sashes with horizontal bars. The left side of the entrance has two paired ground-floor windows, while the right has a single window. The first floor includes a triple window on the left and paired windows in the central and right-hand sections. The attic features paired windows on the left and a single window in the wing, topped with a small trefoil.

Steep gabled dormers with casements are located on the centre and right return, which also includes a gable with cross stair windows. The stacks have moulded ashlar tops. A single-storey connecting range on the left has three louvred dormers and a pent roof supported by an open wooden verandah. The interior has been largely remodelled, including a replacement stair added in the late 20th century.
