Description
Knowle School is a board school built around 1900, located on Maxse Road in Bristol. The building is constructed of brick with limestone dressings and features gable stacks along with a triple Roman tiled cross-gabled and hipped roof. It is designed in the Queen Anne style and is a single storey structure.
The central hall is flanked by classroom blocks and has tall end gables with central stacks, segmental pediments, and curved brackets on either side. Obelisk finials are positioned at the eaves, and the hall features inverted semicircular arches divided by short columns. The ridge is topped with a large hipped lantern that has a modillion cornice, flanked by four large windows on each side, all with glazing bars, and the base of a hexagonal cupola.
The northeast elevation has 18 windows, complete with full-width sill and impost bands. At each end of this elevation are two gables adorned with openwork square pinnacles and finials on rolled bases. Between these gables are two lower hipped gables, and tall, thin pyramidal vents rise to the ridge behind. Each gable includes a central semicircular-arched window with alternate brick and stone voussoirs, alongside narrow flanking windows featuring split keys, with 12/12-pane central sashes and 6/6-pane flanking sashes in flush frames. There are also semicircular-arched basement windows.
The opposite elevation has five similar gables. The hall gables are decorated with a carved top section featuring a winged cupid and swag above a keyed oculus, and two large semicircular-arched windows with alternate brick and stone voussoirs. The ridge behind the hall also has tall thin pyramid vents.
At the Maxse Road end, there is a single-storey parapeted block beneath the end gable, featuring an ashlar panel and a right-hand doorway with Gibbs blocks and a cartouche key. The left-hand side has a parapeted three-window block. Rainwater hoppers are inscribed with "BSB." The interior has not been inspected, but the building represents a typical later plan form of the Bristol School Board, showcasing fine decorative stone detailing. It is considered a notable example, possibly designed by either H Dare Bryan or F Bligh Bond.
