Description

Hailey House, located at Haileybury and Imperial Service College, is a school building that was originally a private house, built around 1720. A large dormitory wing was added in 1865 by Matthew Digby Wyatt, and the older part was altered in 1879. The building is constructed of red brick with red tiled gabled roofs and has an L-shaped layout with three storeys. The oldest section, situated at the angle, is a double pile plan 18th century house featuring parallel gabled roofs oriented east-west. The south front has four windows with sash windows, segmental arches, and a modular cornice. The entrance is located at the east end and dates from the early 19th century, with arches for cellar openings. A semi-circular attic window is present on the rear wing.

The large three-storey dormitory block, added to the west end, projects to the south to accommodate a tall entrance turret at the north angle. The open lower part features Venetian Gothic arches supported by a stout cast iron column with a stone tas-de-charge. There is an original wrought iron grille in a Gothic style, heavy brick corbelled eaves, stone floor bands, and a row of triangular gabled dormers. The dormitory has closely set sash windows, while the ground floor has larger, more widely spaced windows. The west gable chimney features stone corbelling. The rear wing, built in 1879, is simpler in design.

This house predates the college and was once the residence of Rev. T R Malthus when he was a professor at the East India College (Haileybury). It is noted that one of the first Wisterias in Britain was planted at Hailey House in the early 19th century. The building is part of a picturesque group of red brick structures located east of the main Quad.
