Description

The United Reformed Church, built in 1860 by Poulton and Woodman, was formerly a Congregation Church. It is constructed of yellow stock brick with Bath stone dressings and features a slate roof. The building is two storeys tall and designed in a Romanesque style with Italianate details. It has a double apse plan and a south front that includes two projecting towers with pierced parapets on top, flanking a single-storey, three-arched loggia that has a similar parapet. The loggia and the ground floors of the towers have rusticated arches, with the towers featuring stone plate tracery. The main block displays continuous triplets of round-headed lancets on both the ground and first floors. Inside, the church has a segmental roof supported by plain cast iron beams. There are double galleries around three sides, with the lower gallery on spiralled cast iron columns and the upper gallery on wrought iron brackets, which includes an elaborate cast iron balcony. A large organ and pulpit are located in the centre of the north side. This imposing building is situated in an open area east of North Street.
