Description
The Congregational Church, built in 1860 by Poulton and Woodman, showcases a mixed neo-Greek and Romanesque style. Constructed from ashlar with a slate roof, the church features a symmetrical front that rises two storeys. The ground floor is characterized by elliptically headed windows with cast-iron glazing, flanking a triple arched portal adorned with fanlights and keystones. A band of impost blocks runs across the building. On the upper floor, arched windows flank a central five-light window, with arched narrow lights on either side, the outer ones being shorter. The imposts of the outer windows also form part of a continuous band. A modillion cornice is present, interrupted by a central pedimented gable that includes an oculus. The side elevations display tall paired arched windows and a continuous modillion cornice, while the low apsed north end adds to the structure's design. Inside, there is a gallery at the entrance end and a round arched apse.
