Description
The Congregational Church, located on Parsonage Street in Halstead, was built in 1865. It is constructed from random dressed stone and has a steep pitched grey slate roof. The building is arranged on a cruciform plan. The north front features two entrance porches with pitched roofs and two-centred arches with moulded jambs. A central section is distinguished by small traceried windows at a lower level and a large traceried window above. A prominent tower originally featured a stone spire at the south-west corner; this has since been removed.
Inside, the church retains its original layout. Galleries are present on all sides, having a panelled front supported by cast iron columns. Further, thinner cast iron columns support the five arch-braced roof and arcades. At the south end, a moulded arch leads to the organ chamber, which houses a large organ above a vestry partitioned by a gothic screen behind the rostrum. A gothic bracket clock is positioned on the north gallery front. The rostrum, reading desk, and benches remain intact. A former Sunday School is located in the basement, featuring cast iron columns supporting the floor above.
