Description

The lych gate at St Peter's Church, located 100 meters to the east-north-east of the chancel, was built around 1919 for Canon Mills in memory of his son and others who were killed in the Great War. It features an oak timber frame set on a waist-high plinth made of knapped flint, topped with limestone capping, quoins, and buttress offsets. The steep roof is covered with red tiles and gabled at the front. Inside, there is a shallow covered gateway with oak boarded double gates and two benches. The gate has moulded bargeboards and two scissor-braced principals with ogee braces connecting the corner posts to the undersides of the braces. The east gable displays cusped lozenge-shaped bracing and includes a raised-lettered inscription on a board, topped with embattled cresting.
