Benington BENINGTON CHURCH GREEN (north side) Lych gate at St Peter's Church (100m to ENE of chancel)

GV II

Lych gate. Circa 1919 for Canon Mills rectue in memory of son and others killed in Great War. Oak timber frame on a knapped flint waist-high plinth with limestone capping, quoins, and buttress offsets. Red tile steep roof gabled to front. A shallow covered gateway with oak boarded double gates, and 2 benches inside. Moulded bargeboards. 2 scissor-braced principals with ogee braces from corner posts to undersides of braces. Cusped lozenge-shaped bracing in E gable with raised- lettered inscription on board with embattled cresting.
