Description
The lych gate to the Church of St Peter is located approximately 35 meters north of the church and was built in the late 19th century. It features a timber frame painted black, resting on granite stone plinths. The roof is hipped with gablets and is covered in concrete tiles, which replaced the original bands of plain and scalloped clay tiles.
The structure consists of two unequal bays, providing a coffin entrance and a pedestrian entrance accessed from north to south. It has three upright timber posts with arch braces supporting the sill beam. Angled struts connect the arch braces to the tie beam, and smaller arch braces rise from the posts to the central axial beam, creating a pointed arch for the pedestrian entrance. The timbers are stop-chamfered with run-out stops. The hipped roof features gablets at the apex adorned with timber trefoil motifs.
The lych gate is supported by three granite stone plinths that lead up a stepped approach to the churchyard. The steps are bordered by granite kerb stones and have cobbled floor platforms made of Mortimer slate stones.
