Description

Mauldens Cottage is a house dating from the early 17th century, with later extensions added in the 20th century. It features a timber frame set on a chamfered stuccoed sill, with red brick and painted brick infill between the exposed timber. The ground floor is stuccoed, and the roof is steep, made of old red tiles, half-hipped with gablets. The house is two storeys tall with a lobby-entry plan and faces north, showcasing a gabled porch with 1½ storeys and two front windows on each floor. The windows are flush casement style with lattice leaded glazing. The timber frame includes jowled posts, and the end walls have wide panels that extend the full height of the storey. The front is nearly symmetrical, featuring a half-height rail and narrower panels on the first floor. The frame includes convex tension braces and a convex brace in the porch. The chimney has two staggered square conjoined shafts. Inside, the cottage retains many original features, including moulded and stopped joists, axial floor beams, ledged plank doors on iron hooks and bands, and carpenters' assembly numbers. The wide fireplace in the eastern room has three small recesses and an oven with an iron door. The staircase, located at the rear of the chimney, now rises from the eastern room but may have originally risen from the smaller western room. There is also a cast iron plaque indicating Boxmoor grazing rights, numbered 614.
