Description
The Acorn is a house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the late 18th century. The original timber-frame structure is infilled with painted brick, with the ground floor also cased in painted brick. A later brick-built extension is to the east. The roof is covered with steep old red tiles, featuring a catslide outshut to the rear (north) of the extension, which overlaps the older part of the building to the west. The original house was likely a 2-storey, 2-cell structure, possibly with a central lobby entrance, but the taller 2-storey extension to the east provided a new entrance and an additional room. There are 2 19th-century casement windows on each floor of the front elevation, and flush, segmental brick-arched casements in the eastern extension. The timber frame is exposed internally on both floors of the existing house. The upper floor extends into the roof space, where the lower parts of queen-post trusses and braced purlins are visible. The living and dining rooms have exposed beams; the dining room also displays exposed ceiling joists. Timber lintels are present above both original fireplaces, although the dining room fireplace has been filled in.
