Description

Venus Hill Farm is a farmhouse, now a private house, dating from the early 17th century. It was extended to the south around 1900 and has an east wing added around 1960. The building features a timber frame that is cased in red brick at the front, while the northern end facing the road and the rear are roughcast with false half-timbering. It has a steep old red tile roof. The oldest part consists of three structural bays and is two stories tall, facing east. The first floor has three long flush casement windows, each with three lights, while the ground floor has three large and two small tall windows, all with small-paned casements. There is a gabled porch at the south corner of the southern bay leading to the door. A large external chimney on the northern gable serves a former ground floor service room, which has axial joists. There is also a capped-off rear-wall chimney and an adjoining stair projection from the middle room. The fireplace in the southern room is also connected to the same chimney. The middle and southern bays feature axial chamfered beams. Inside, the timber frame is exposed in the front and rear walls, showcasing jowled posts, a squint-butted scarf in the wallplate, a clasped-purlin roof, and straight wind-braces. Additionally, there is a cast iron Boxmoor grazing rights plaque numbered 607.
