Description

Berkhamsted Lodge is a lodge to Rossway, now functioning as a private house. It was likely built around 1802 for Robert Sutton of Highgate, with the main house originally named Rothway, which was rebuilt in 1863. The building is constructed of uncoursed knapped flint and features a steep, half-hipped red tiled roof made of various decorative tiles, extending on the north end and east front to create a rustic verandah. This single-storey rectangular gatelodge faces east and has a symmetrical front with two windows and a central door. The flint corner pilasters and the raised surround enhance the pointed doorway. The windows are three-light transomed leaded-lattice casements set under segmental arches. There is a rear extension. The lodge is similar in style to Tring Lodge to Rossway.
