Description

Thunderdell Lodge is a gatelodge to Ashridge, now a private house, built around 1817 by Jeffry Wyatt for the Earl of Bridgewater. The structure features a chequer pattern of limestone with coursed squared knapped flints and Yorkstone plinth slabs, topped with steep slate roofs. It is an L-shaped building with two stories, consisting of a main range running north-south and a shorter wing extending east from the south end.

At the southwest corner, there is a polygonal two-story projection with three windows on each floor. The south end of the west wall has a projecting, parapeted square single-story porch that includes a Tudor arched south doorway with a battened door and a narrow moulded east window. The west side has two windows and a modern matching door, while the east gable features windows on each floor, with a two-light window above a three-light window.

The windows are hollow chamfered stone mullioned with moulded labels on the ground floor, and they have iron casements with lattice leaded glazing. The upper gable windows have Y-tracery with Tudor arches. The north and east gables are adorned with crow stepped parapets and a splendid scroll stone finial at the east. Large stone chimneys with diagonal square shafts complete the design. A chequered stone and knapped flint wall with moulded brick capping surrounds the garden to the east of the lodge.
