Description
The Old Dairy is a house dating from the late 17th century, with renovations made in the 18th and 19th centuries. It is constructed of red brick in Flemish bond, featuring an exposed tie-beam in the east gable and a timber-framed triangle in the west gable. The building has a steeply pitched roof with a rear catslide to an outshut, which is now slated. The house is two storeys high with an attic, facing south with its east end towards the road. There are single-storey tiled extensions at the ends, set back to align with the rear outshut.
The south front has a plastered plinth, a floor-band, and two windows on each floor, along with a rustic gabled porch that leads to a plank door in the middle, topped by a segmental arch. The windows are three-light flush casements with flat gauged arches and small panes. A date plaque is located above the porch. The east end features a small 18th-century lattice window on the right side for the attic, while the left side has a small blocked similar window, partially obscured by a large external chimney with chamfered offsets. There is also a later small chimney on the west gable.
The east extension may be original, showcasing a chamfered plinth, English bond in the lower part, a two-light plate casement window, and a plank door. Inside, this extension contains a large brick oven, fireplace, and copper, accessible from the house through the dairy in the rear outshut. The staircase also rises in the outshut. The larger east room has a cased axial beam, and the wall between the house and outshut features brick panels between thin timber studs, suggesting the outshut is original. The west room has a chamfered axial beam, and the external west chimney and fireplace, along with a separate stair in the outshut, may have been added in the 19th century. The oven was last in use around 60 years ago.
