Description
Nos. 47, 49, and 51 Stocks Road are three former almshouses, dating from the late 17th century, situated on the site of a Town House supported by a charity from the 15th century or earlier. No. 47 is slightly later, and its north lean-to extension was once a separate cottage. The buildings underwent alterations and rear extensions in 1933. They feature timber frames on tarred brick plinths, with painted brick infill and casing on No. 47. The steep thatched roofs include three large swept dormers at the eaves with decorative cresting, while the low north end lean-to extension has a hipped thatched roof.
The block consists of three picturesque one and a half storey houses facing east, with a chimney on the rear roof slope of No. 49 and an external chimney on the north gable of No. 51. Each house is designed with one room and a bedroom above. The east front has three windows, with three plank doors to the left of each window, a small window in the north extension, wide-spaced timbers on Nos. 49 and 51, and straight angle braces on No. 51. The windows are two-light 19th-century flush casements, with taller two-light small-paned casements in the three dormers. There is also a small upper floor window in the south gable of No. 47. Notably, No. 49 features a wide fireplace and a clasped-purlin roof structure.
