Description

The Stocks and Whipping Post is a combined structure located on the west side of Stocks Road in Aldbury. It dates from the 17th century or earlier and has been repaired at the base of the posts. The construction features oak framing with wrought iron straps and fittings. The stocks consist of two horizontal planks with recesses along their meeting edges, supported above the ground in slots within two posts. The structure is oriented almost north-south along the axis of Stocks Road.

The taller southern part has a hinged iron strap on the east side, which includes two U-shaped curves to hold the right wrist at different heights. There was likely a corresponding strap on the west side in the past. Iron plates reinforce the post, which has chamfered edges and a shaped top. The shorter northern post also features similar plates and a shaped top. A heavy iron strap runs continuously over the upper movable plank, with cranked ends and a remaining staple for securing it in the closed position at the southern end.
