Description

Chantry Cottages is a block of four houses built in the 18th century and renovated around 1856 by the Brownlow Estate, which extended the southern house (No. 1) to serve as a schoolmistress's house. The cottages are constructed of red brick with steep red tiled roofs that are half-hipped at the southern end. They are two stories tall with part attics and are set back from the road, facing east. The rear of the cottages features outshuts with catslide roofs.

No. 1 has an added rear parlour that includes a small canted bay window on the south side, with cast-iron lattice casements that match those of the southern end of the school. The block has two large square internal chimneys that serve all four houses. Each house features two first-floor windows and a larger ground floor window next to a gabled open porch that leads to a plank door. The windows are Yorkshire sliding casements with lattice leading, with two lights above and three lights below. There are also two small rear gabled dormers that provide light to the attics. Inside, the cottages have exposed chamfered tie-beams and stud partitions filled with brick. The cottages are included for their group value.
