Description
Aldbury School and School House are a village school and attached house built in 1856 for Lord Brownlow, with a northern extension added in 1878. The school is constructed of plum brick, while the house is buff brick with red dressings, both having steep red tiled roofs. The school building is a long, single-storey structure oriented north-south, set back behind Chantry Cottages and featuring a small gabled southeast porch and a large canted bay window on the south gable, creating a picturesque grouping with the east end of the parish church. It has cast iron lattice casement windows, painted white, with margin lights to the east gable of the porch, and a terracotta plaque with a coronated 'B' for Brownlow in the gable. Moulded labels are present above three depressed arched windows and two-centred pointed doorways. High sidewall chimneys are also visible. The 1878 northern extension mirrors the existing school with a stepped three-light gabled window, a large chimney, and decorative hinges on a pointed arched door. The two-storey, T-shaped School House has a lean-to porch in the angle, a red brick floor band and offset plinth, a panelled door, and three-light casement windows with cambered arches. The interior of the school features exposed, heavily chamfered timber roof trusses, partially concealed by a ceiling at collar level. The buildings are included on the list for their group value.
