Description
Faerie Hollow is a house located in Ashridge Park, originally built as a 16th-century hall house. It was converted into three estate houses in the 17th or early 18th century and underwent alterations in the 19th century. The property was sold in the 1920s, with a southeast extension added around 1970. The house features a timber frame with red brick casing and extensions, topped with steep old red tile roofs.
The building has two cells and an end-chimney in the middle. Its west-facing facade includes three front gabled dormers at the eaves, which have cusped bargeboards and three-light lattice leaded casements. On the ground floor, there are two canted tiled bay windows with a door situated between them. The house is adorned with two tall chimneys that have pairs of diagonal square shafts.
At the rear, there are three gabled stair towers featuring winding stairs, with the northern part rebuilt after a fire. An entrance lobby is located between the southern two towers. The frame of the house includes jowled posts, cambered tie-beams, and a clasped purlin roof with collar and queen-strut trusses. Each stair turret has a leaded lancet window. Inside, there are axial chamfered beams and a large open fireplace. Faerie Hollow was formerly known as Appletrees and Witchcraft Bottom, and a main road used to run along the valley to the west of the house.
