Description
The war memorial in front of John O'Gaddesden's House was built between 1920 and 1921. The concept and some materials for the memorial were brought from Italy by Mrs. Wheatley, who was a cousin to Lady Brownlow and the wife of Lord Brownlow's agent. The memorial features red brick piers, a plinth, and coping over tile creasing, along with plastered panels and limestone inscribed slabs on the side panels. The centerpiece is a carved Italian stone in Renaissance style, adorned with two applied inscribed veined marble slabs. Each side of the memorial has terracotta octagonal panels in the balustrade. It includes a red pantiled lean-to hood supported by moulded S-curved wooden brackets. Designed as a wayside shrine to commemorate both World Wars, it has a hooded centerpiece and side panels with quadrant swept copings. There is a low balustraded wall on each side, featuring two rows of terracotta wreathed roundels on octagonal blocks. The central feature has a rounded head with a carved soffit, two bracketed stages, and Renaissance carved panelled pilasters.
