Description
This is a late 17th and early 18th century house, which was re-faced in the 19th century for Lord Brownlow in 1868. The house is timber-framed and encased in red brick, with grey brick headers on the ground floor. The front and sides of the first floor are faced with a grid of dark timbers filled with buff and light red brick in bands. The south crosswing has a timbered gable with red brick infill and a stone plaque bearing the initials "EB" and a coronet. The roof is covered with steep old red tiles.
The house is arranged in a T-shape and faces west with three windows across the main block. The front door, set within a gabled porch, leads into the stair hall next to the crosswing. Two large external brick chimneys are located at the north end, the second serving a slate-roofed outshut. A tall chimney with two shafts serves the crosswing. There are 3-light lattice leaded windows; the upper floor of the hall range has two 2-light windows. The front wall of the hall range has been raised.
Exposed corner posts and wall studs are visible on the southeast and south walls of the crosswing, which has a steep side-purlin roof and a hollow chamfered axial floor beam.
