Description
The Burleigh Primary School is a building constructed in 1946, designed by Hertfordshire County Council. It features horizontal precast concrete panels and a mono-pitched roof with deep eaves. The layout includes a central hall with kitchens facing the road, a classroom block to the south, and three infants classrooms arranged in a staggered formation linked by corridors to the north, which is the earliest part of the school. The infants classrooms have large windows facing away from the road, each consisting of three bays with wall-to-wall vertical windows, and the glazing is divided horizontally by a transom. The entrance to each former infants classroom is located on the south side, sheltered by concrete canopies.
Additionally, there is an attached block that is one tall storey with a very shallow pitched roof, featuring eight bays, six of which have glazed lower walls and a continuous clerestory band beneath the deep eaves. A block of five classrooms is attached to the south, arranged in pairs except for the end classroom, each almost fully glazed away from the road with four lights each. Service areas are situated towards the road. The Burleigh school holds historical significance as the first school built under the influential Hertfordshire County Council system.
