Description
Essendon School is a primary school built in 1947 by Hertfordshire County Council. The structure features a steel frame with horizontal precast concrete panels, designed using the Hills 8' 3" system as modified by Hertfordshire County Council. The building has a low-pitched roof over the hall and flat roofs over the classrooms.
The tall hall block is accompanied by two lower single-storey junior classrooms, which are set back and separated by a lower entrance link from the infants' classroom block. All these elements are arranged along a slight ridge, with the classrooms overlooking a valley. The hall has mostly solid walls, with a 5-bay strip of tall windows at first-floor level, and a brick podium that is recessed behind steel columns. A prominent circular concrete chimney is located at one end of the hall.
The classrooms are nearly fully glazed, featuring three bays of glazing per classroom, with metal window frames. The building also has overhanging eaves that create a cornice effect. This school is notable for being the first constructed using the Hills 8' 3" system as reformed by Hertfordshire.
