Description
The Essendon War Memorial is a First World War memorial that includes later additions for the Second World War. It is made of limestone and is situated near the center of the village on a hill, at the junction of High Road and Church Street. The memorial features a limestone wheel-head cross adorned with fleur-de-lis detailing on its four segments. The cross has a tapering octagonal shaft with a moulded foot, which rises from an octagonal plinth set on a three-stepped base. The plinth has a moulded cap and foot and displays the main inscription along with the names of the fallen.
On the front (south) face of the plinth, the inscription reads: FOR GOD,/ KING AND COUNTRY/ 1914 – 1918. The names of 25 individuals are inscribed on the plinth's sides and the west face. A stone tablet with chamfered top corners is attached to the middle step of the base, facing south, which features an inset panel with the Second World War dedication: 1939 – 1945/ (7 NAMES). All lettering is incised and painted black.
The memorial is set within a small paved area that is enclosed by a low brick wall.
