Description
Barclay School is a secondary school built between 1950 and 1951 by the architects Yorke, Rosenberg and Mardall. The building features a combination of brick, stone rubble, glass bricks, precast concrete panels, and reinforced concrete, with a flat roof. Its plan is roughly shaped like an 'H' and consists of one and two storeys. The school is extensively glazed with horizontal strip windows that have metal frames. The entrance includes a curved wall that supports a pergola over the entrance. There are angular concrete staircases located at intervals on the exterior. Inside, there is a fine and spacious entrance hall with ironstone paving, two staircases, and a glass brick wall, along with an abstract mural by Kenneth Rowntree. Notably, this was the first co-educational school in Hertfordshire, and it received the RIBA Bronze Medal.
