Description
Templewood School is a primary school built in 1950 by Hertfordshire County Council. It features a steel frame with precast concrete panels that are set vertically, along with coloured panel infill, based on the Hills 8' 3" system as modified by Hertfordshire County Council. The building has an irregular plan with a central hall, flanked by kitchen and dining rooms to the east. There are two additional wings: a single-storey section with three low classrooms for infants on the south-western side, and five taller classrooms for juniors on the north-western side, arranged in a staggered layout. Each classroom has horizontal strip windows with three bays, coloured solid panels beneath, and metal frames, along with overhanging eaves cornices. The interior features three original murals by Pat Tew, with two located outside the hall and one in the dining room. The school has been awarded the RIBA medal and is noted in A. Saint's "Towards a Social Architecture."
