Description

23 and 25 Church End is a house dating from around 1600, with extensions and remodelling from the late 18th century. The building is timber framed and plastered, standing two storeys high with a slightly dislocated 'T' shaped plan. The north-south long block features a slight central break in the ridge line and has hips at both the north and south ends. A gabled block projects towards the east, complete with a gable end stack, while a ridge line stack is located towards the north end of the long block. All roofs are covered with clay peg tiles.

The windows are mainly 20th century small pane casements, but there is a double hung sash with small panes at the north end of the east elevation. At the angle of the east elevation and the projecting wing, there is a late 18th century doorcase featuring a flat hood supported by scroll brackets and a concave 'tent' roof.

Inside, the building reveals its timber framing and retains a two-storey layout with a crosswing at the south end, a hall bay, a stack bay, and a service bay at the north end. It was formerly designed in a 'baffle entry' plan style and has a side purlin roof with windbracing. Much of the structure has been rebuilt, incorporating late 18th century King post trusses, while the south end block is entirely from the late 18th century.
