Description

CRESSING TL 72 SE

1/31 Fell's Farmhouse

  • II

Wrongly shown on 1955 OS map as Field's Farm. House. Circa 1570, altered in C18 and C20. Timber framed, plastered, roofed with handmade red plain tiles. 3 bays facing S, extended to W by one bay in C18. C18 central stack. C18/19 external end stacks. C19/20 single-storey extension to E. C20 2-storey lean-to extension to N. 2 storeys. All windows are C20 casements. C20 French window. Roof half-hipped. The original building has jowled posts, close studding, edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the wallplates, some members of main frame chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. Diamond mortices and shutter grooves for unglazed windows visible at W end, studding removed. Chamfered axial beams, plain joists. Much disturbance of floor structure in the middle bay, and re-use of old components; this may indicate the position of the original chimney, demolished. The C18 central stack has small hearths facing E and W, refaced with C20 bricks. The C18 W extension has unjowled posts, and lighter framing and floor joists. The combination of evidence for unglazed windows and lamb's tongue stops permits a close dating of the original structure. RCHM 6 (as Field's Farm).
