Description
Fell's Farmhouse is a house dating from around 1570, with alterations made in the 18th and 20th centuries. It is timber framed, plastered, and has a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The house originally has three bays facing south and was extended to the west by one bay in the 18th century. There is a central stack from the 18th century and external end stacks from the 18th or 19th centuries. A single-storey extension was added to the east in the 19th or 20th century, and a two-storey lean-to extension was added to the north in the 20th century. The building is two storeys high, and all windows are 20th-century casements, including a 20th-century French window. The roof is half-hipped.
The original structure features jowled posts, close studding, and edge-halved and bridled scarfs in the wallplates. Some members of the main frame are chamfered with lamb's tongue stops. At the west end, there are visible diamond mortices and shutter grooves for unglazed windows, although the studding has been removed. The interior has chamfered axial beams and plain joists, with significant disturbance to the floor structure in the middle bay, suggesting the former position of the original chimney, which has been demolished. The 18th-century central stack has small hearths facing east and west, which have been refaced with 20th-century bricks. The 18th-century west extension features unjowled posts and lighter framing and floor joists. The evidence of unglazed windows and lamb's tongue stops allows for a precise dating of the original structure.
