Description
Red Lion Cottages is a house dating from around 1600, with alterations made in the early 19th century and 20th century. It is timber framed and roughcast rendered, topped with handmade red plain tiles. The building consists of two bays aligned northeast to southwest. There is an early 19th-century stack located to the northwest of the southwest bay, and two other cottages (numbers 2 and 3) are situated beyond, but they are not included in this listing. A 20th-century external stack is found at the northeast end, along with a single-storey extension added around 1952.
The house is two storeys high. The southwest elevation features one early 19th-century sash window with 16 lights on each floor and a 20th-century half-glazed door. The southeast elevation, which faces the street, has one 20th-century casement window. Inside, the southwest bay includes a lodged axial beam that is chamfered with lamb's tongue stops, along with plain joists of horizontal section and a 20th-century grate. The northeast bay has plain joists arranged longitudinally, a blocked stair trap, and the joists at the northeast end have been raised to level the floor. There are plain battened internal doors from the 18th or 19th century, and one 17th-century moulded three-plank door on the first floor, which is possibly original to the building and should be treated with special care. The northwest wallplate has a square groove for sliding shutters. The wall framing is concealed by plaster on both the interior and exterior, but it is likely raised. The roof is constructed with clasped purlins. The building was formerly a public house or beerhouse known as The Red Lion.
