Description

Grinwoods, formerly the Post Office, is an early 18th-century building that was altered in the 19th century. It is timber framed and plastered, with a roof made of handmade red plain tiles. The building has three bays facing south, with the gable end towards the street and an axial stack located to the right of the center, creating a lobby entrance. There is an original full-length lean-to at the rear, which features a catslide roof. The structure is one storey high with attics and has a three-window range of mid-19th century sashes with six lights. A near-central 19th-century door leads into the building.

On the right side facing the street, there is a 19th-century splayed shop window, a flush four-panel door with a moulded surround and a simple flat canopy, along with a 19th-century casement window in the lean-to. The rear elevation includes a 19th-century horizontal sash window with nine over nine lights, two 19th-century casements, and a plain boarded door. Inside, there is a deeply chamfered axial beam in the right bay, and two wide wood-burning hearths—one facing to the right, which is disused, and another to the left, which has been reduced for a 20th-century grate. The building features primary straight bracing, including re-used timber, and retains its original stair in the rear lean-to. There is a 19th-century corner cupboard in the rear right corner of the left ground-floor room, although the door has been removed. All original internal battened doors are still present. This house was originally weatherboarded and is representative of the New England 'saltbox houses'.
