Description

Jackmans, located at No. 18 Church End in Great Dunmow, is a house dating from the mid to late 15th century and the 17th century. It has a timber-framed and plastered structure with an 'L' shaped plan, featuring a two-storey wing at the west end and a one-storey extension with attics on the east side. The west wing has a gabled roof covered with asbestos slate, decorative bargeboards from the 20th century, and an extension bay on the south with a gabled roof of peg tiles. The east section also has a gabled roof of peg tiles, two gabled dormers, and a substantial square brick chimney that rises through the roof against the east flank of the wing. The west flank includes 20th-century pargetting, a bow window, and a hipped lean-to extension. The windows are a mix of 19th and 20th-century casements.

Inside, the house reveals a three-bay floored mid to late 15th-century 'end jetty' design, with the structure underbuilt at the front but largely intact. It features a simple yet massive crown post roof, jowled posts, cambered tie beams, halved and bridled scarf joists, and soffit tenoned floor joists. The east side likely had an open arcade leading to a contemporary flank lean-to along the two front bays. There is an inglenook fireplace facing east, and the later wing on this side has nominal timber framing that is probably from the 17th century.
