Description
Little Barrington Hall is a house dating from the 15th century and mid 16th century. It is timber framed and plastered, featuring gabled peg tile roofs. The building is two storeys high and has a U-shaped plan, with a 20th-century extension on the western side. The roofs of the eastern and northern blocks slope down to single storey level on the courtyard side. The north elevation has the eastern range projecting forward with a gable on the left. The main block includes an off-centre 20th-century gabled porch and an off-centre ridge line stack above. The eastern range has a long wall jetty supported by octagonal painted timber posts framing the entrance door. Much of the eastern and northern sides are finished in ashlar. The windows are 19th or 20th-century casements with small panes, except for one tripartite double-hung sash at the north end. A large rear wall stack features two tall diagonal shafts that have been rebuilt to their original pattern. Inside, the eastern range displays mid 16th-century timber framing and a notable arched door head with sunk spandrels on the first floor. The staircase in this block has an upper level balustrade made of late 16th-century turned balusters and a lower flight of early 18th-century turned balusters, along with some 17th-century panelling. Part of the northern range is a single aisled structure likely from the 15th century, featuring jowled posts and substantial arcade braces. The tie beams have large hollow chamfers.
