Description

Forest Cottage is an early 14th-century cottage located in Hatfield Broad Oak Wood Row. It is timber framed and now pebble dashed, with a thatched gabled roof and a thatched lean-to extension on the east end. The cottage is of two storeys and includes aisles on both sides of the main block. The east gable is partly black weatherboarded, and there is a gable end stack. Windows are 20th-century casements, and a small stack is on the south roof slope.

A single bay survives of a very small aisled hall, featuring sharply curved aisle braces and a thick, cranked arcade brace. There's a splayed scarf joint with under squinted abutments and unjowled chamfered arcade posts. An inserted floor is supported by a decorated block bearing the inscription 'AB 1634.' The cottage includes a 17th-century inglenook fireplace and one good 17th-century door.
