Description
The Church of St John the Evangelist, built in 1856, is constructed of random flint with stone dressings and knapped flint panels on the buttresses. The roofs are made of machine-made clay tiles. The church features an unaisled nave, a west tower, a south porch, a polygonal chancel, and a vestry on the north side.
The tower has two stages, with the belfry slightly recessed above a stone string band. The belfry stage includes a two-light window with a circular window above it, all under a hood mould on the west face. The north and south faces of the tower have a pair of narrow lancets, while the lower stages each have a single central lancet to light the two floors. Flat buttresses clasp the angles, and the east face features a semi-circular stairtower in flint with its own tiled roof. The main tower roof is pyramidal and topped with a decorative wrought iron cross.
The nave is adorned with simple lancet windows, angled corner buttresses, and simple buttresses with offsets between them. The polygonal chancel has angled buttresses and lancets on each face. The south porch is timber-framed above a flint and stone plinth, with arched openings that have been infilled with diamond leaded glazing.
Inside, the nave roof is of arch-braced collar form, featuring cusped 'V' struts and king posts above the collar, all supported on wall posts resting on stone 13th-century style moulded corbels. The chancel arch is pointed and chamfered, with a simpler roof than the nave. The chancel floor is laid with contemporary patterned tiles, and the east wall of the nave displays an original inscription with the text of Exodus Chapter XX. The church also contains a simple stone drum font, supported by a central pedestal and four attached circular columns, each with moulded bases and foliated capitals. The church is noted for its architectural and landscape value.
